To teachers
You may be wondering why we think schools are so important when it comes to encouraging and supporting young people to volunteer.
The answer is simple – research shows that 74% of young people took part in social action as a result of information from their schools. Even more significantly, 61% of young people surveyed cited teachers as key figures who encouraged them to take part in volunteering.
Schools are a vital gateway for young people to access such opportunities.
That is why we are offering this guide to schools.

Why do we think volunteering is so important for young people?
We think that volunteering provides the best and most accessible opportunities to develop key ‘soft skills’ that enhance classroom learning and employability. Too many young people (up to 56% of non-volunteers) are missing out on the chance to volunteer simply because they do not know what is available.
While this Guide is directly aimed at young people, we also want to support you as teachers by providing a resource that can be used to enhance the pastoral and extra-curricular programme in your schools. We thank you for the amazing work you currently do, and hope that YOB can make finding out about and sharing opportunities just that little bit easier for you as well as for students. YOB is here to help.
